Royal Academy in Bhutan
What began around ten years ago has developed into three impressive timber lighthouse projects in the Himalayas.
Our commitment in Asia aims to help the versatile, sustainable building material wood achieve a breakthrough. In doing so, we are focusing specifically on the transfer of expertise - because local processing and production creates the greatest added value for the region.
For this reason, we set up the first glulam production facility in the Himalayas at over 3,000 meters above sea level in Bhutan in 2015. The first beams made from local wood were glued there by local specialists for the Royal Academy.
The first building made from local glulam, the Dining Hall, was completed in 2018. The second project, the MPH with its curved beams, followed in 2022.
We visited the projects again this week - and are still impressed by the uniqueness and quality of the timber constructions.
