Ice Rink, Sissach (CH)

In 2005, the Sissach Ice Sports Arena was constructed by local and international companies using an innovative roof structure. The project was intended to meet the evolving recreational and sporting needs of the young and active population of the Upper Basel region.

Unfortunately, this success was short-lived. Following a series of structural safety assessments, the Municipality of Sissach was forced to close the arena to the public in autumn 2012 and stabilise the roof with temporary support columns. Structural investigations and liability assessments subsequently led to the decision that the arena would also remain closed throughout the 2013/2014 winter season, with severe consequences for the local sports clubs that depended on the facility.

The municipality was eager to reopen the ice rink as quickly as possible. Demolition and replacement of the existing roof structure was considered only as a last resort, as it would have resulted in significant financial and material losses.

In late 2013, Häring's engineers presented the Municipality of Sissach with a far more sustainable and technically convincing alternative: strengthening and rehabilitating the existing roof structure. This proposal was quickly endorsed.

Häring was subsequently commissioned to carry out the demanding rehabilitation works, including the reinforcement of the existing timber structure and the installation of high-performance steel tension ties. The project was successfully completed in two phases, fully restoring the structural integrity of the arena and meeting the Municipality of Sissach's expectations.
